Hall of Fame

Babblemur Hall of Fame has officially been updated:

2012 – Boaris
2011 – Mooseye
2010 – Jutdog
2009 – Jaybird
2008 – Jutdog*

Rumors have begun that Jutdog, once considered the John Wooden of Babblemurball, may be past his prime following two consecutive years without a championship ring.  However, supports re-assure that a third place finish this year is proof that he still has it.

Jaybird, somehow, dominated the Commy division and sealed a #2 finish, and finished just 2 points shy of the winner. No repeat for you.

Mooseye’s drop from all-time high to no-where-to-be-seen is reflective of the one-&-done mentality that we see so much of in today’s college basketball.

Boaris, who beat his previous best by 84 points this year, has redeemed himself following three straight years of finishes outside of the top 3.  Boaris assures us that he will likely win next year, as he’s learned that he picks better if he limits himself to only 7 Busch Lights in a given draft night.

About 16 weeks out until next season kicks off.  Send ronald a note if you are in or not.  We’re looking to solidify the set-up and line-up.  No hurry, but if you know you’re in or out, let him know too.

Babblemur Recap Rankings

It is time for the Babblemur Recap Rankings, in which Jutdog arbitrarily identifies the best and worst picks of the year. While Boaris was the winner, and Jaybird and Jutdog close contenders, there certainly were picks by other players that exceed expectations or ended up being a turd. Here we go:

Round 1. Kentucky topped the league in point production, and are worthy of this title for both players who selected them. However, having the #2 pick and getting Kentucky was less of a “great” selection and more of a future of having the #2 pick. As a result, Kentucky gets passed over by the #9 selection Kansas, which exceeded everyone’s expectations and generated over 140 points.

There were also several terrible selections – teams that could have been, but never were, and ended up being some of the worst round 1 selections in the history of the league.
~ Best Pick: Jutdog – Kansas – pick #9 – 141 pts.
~ Best Pick: McGrumps – Kentucky – pick #4 – 169 pts.
~ Best Pick: Boaris – Kentucky – pick #2 – 167 pts.
~ Worst Pick (tie): Musashisan – Arizona – pick #6 – 37 pts.
~ Worst Pick (tie): LongballLarry – Uconn – pick #7 – 39 pts.

Round 2. Entering the post season, Pitt looked to secure the worst round 1 and round 2 picks in the league, but a late CIT postseason burst of +15 helped move them past several other unfortunate picks. In round two, these include possibly the most significant disappointment of the year – Texas A&M, and the same teams that won the turd award in round 1. The round two pick is clear, with Kansas going to LongballLarry at pick 14.
~ Best Pick: LongballLarry – Kansas – pick 14 – 145 pts.
~ Best Pick: SGII – Louisville – pick 12 – 113 pts.
~ Worst Pick: McGrumps – Texax A&M – pick 17 – 17 pts!!

Round 3. Round 3 proved a difference maker for the leaderboard. Teams like Missouri, Florida St, and Cincinnati generated over 70 pts each, and were key contributors to most of the top players this year. Meanwhile, A&M, UCLA, and Butler tanked.
~ Best Picks: Jaybird – Missouri – pick 22 – 84 pts.
~ Best Picks: Lasers – Missouri – pick 30 – 78 pts.
~ Best Picks: Akaoni – Cincinnati – pick 25 – 75 pts.
~ Best Picks: Alphadog – Florida St – pick 28 – 75 pts
~ Best Picks: Jutdog – Florida ST – pick 29 – 73 pts
~ Worst Pick: MadMader – Texas A&M – pick 21 – 17 pts
~ Worst Pick: Babblemur – UCLA – pick 23 – 24 pts
~ Worst Pick: Tabulous – UCLA – pick 24 – 28 pts

Round 4. This round was the easiest to select, with one clear-cut leader and one giant turd.
~ Best Pick: Jutdog – Michigan State – pick 32 – 94 pts
~ Worst Pick: CEO – Villanova – pick 35 – 12 pts.

Round 5. Lots of parity in this round, with no major point earners and only a few below 30. Though not awarded a best pick award, the Colonial had several nice squads in this round with Drexel (50pts), George Mason (32 pts), and VCU (55pts).
~ Best Pick: Musashiasan – Georgetown – pick 46 – 58 pts.
~ Best Pick: Jaybird – NC State – pick 42 – 57 pts.
~ Worst Pick: McGrumps – Villanova – pick 44 – 15 pts.

Round 6. On into picks 51 – 60, there are still a few good performing teams. Getting 40+ points from this round is pretty good, and 9 of the teams selected achieved this. The one clear winner this round exceeded all other squads by more than 15 and beat all teams from the previous round.
~ Best Pick: Akaoni – Stanford – pick 56 – 63 pts.
~ Worst Pick: Longball Larry – Tennessee – pick 54 – 12 pts.
~ Worst Pick: BrewtownCrew – Detroit – pick 53 – 17 pts.

Round 7. This round actually produced a top 15 point producer in Indiana – a team that wasn’t even taken by the Commies. But also taken in this round were 3 other squads generating over 48 pts each – not bad at all. Somehow, McGrumps managed to produce less than 10 points for a team, with Santa Clara earning him an all-time turd selection award. Santa Clara was selected immediately before Georgetown, Drexel, Iona, and BYU.
~ Best Pick: Lasers – Indiana – pick 70 – 72 pts.
~ Best Pick: SlakeB – Georgetown – pick 65 – 52 pts.
~ Best Pick: AlphaDog – St Louis – pick 68 – 49 pts
~ Best Pick: Akaoni – Drexel – pick 65 – 48 pts
~ Worst Pick: McGrumps – Santa Clara – pick 64 – 8 pts.
~ Worst Pick: Primeshow – Detroit – pick 61 – 19 pts.

Round 8. This was the most impressive last round of any year. Seven teams actually produced over 50 points, led by Stanford and Kansas State (the very last team taken). Mixed in with this was a terrible Austin Peay team and a damaging St Johns squad. Boaris’s Minnesota brought in 57 points from the 79th pick. Three less points and he finishes in second despite winning the championship.
~ Best Pick: Primeshow – Kansas St – pick 80 – 62 pts.
~ Best Pick: Tabulous – Stanford – pick 77 – 65 pts.
~ Best Pick: Boaris – Minnesota – pick 79 – 57 pts.
~ Best Pick: Brewtown Crew – VCU – pick 76 – 55 pts.
~ Best Pick: SlakeB – Colorado – pick 76 – 54 pts.
~ Best Pick: Lasers – NC State – pick 71 – 55 pts.
~ Worst Pick: Mooseye – Austin Peay – pick 71 – 10pts.

BOARIS WINS!

Kentucky dominated Kansas in the National title game, and the win pushed BOARIS two points ahead of rival Jaybird to give Boaris his first Babblemur B-Ball College Basketball Contest Win!

Boaris grew up in a poor coal mining family in eastern Kentucky, dreaming only of playing basketball to get away from black lung disease and bad banjo music. His strong work ethic led him to become the all-time leading scorer for UW-Stevens Point, a college degree, and a lucrative job as a banker for the 1%.

Boaris is a four year veteran of the Babbleball Contest. In 2009, Boaris finished in fourth place with Pitt & Oklahoma. In 2010 he finished in fifth place after Kansas & Ohio State were knocked out of the tournament early. In 2011 Boaris slipped to 6th place after putting 8 teams in the NCAA Tournament and having them all knocked out before the Sweet 16. Boaris is a fierce competitor, and is a worthy addition to the Babblemur Hall of Fame.

All season long as Knine and Lasers dominated the Capitalist Division Leader Board, Boaris slowly crept up into contention bolstered by strong play from Cincinnati (71 pts), Michigan (63 pts), Minnesota (57 pts), and Wichita State (48 pts). Notre Dame became a tough opponent and was whacking Big East teams for 43 points. New Mexico State won the WAC tournament to finish with 36 points. Weber State wound up choking in the Big Sky for just 36 points, but expansion draft teams Oral Roberts added 17 and La Salle another 6.

But without a doubt, Kentucky was Boaris’ bread and butter. They went 38-2, went undefeated in the SEC, won the conference regular season, but lost the conference tournament to Vanderbilt.

With Boaris’ win, Jaybird falls to second place, Jutdog, who owned Kansas, ends up in third place.

McGrumps, the other player owning Kentucky, managed to leap seven players with the Kentucky win and finishes in a tie with buddy Longball Larry in 9th place.

Season recaps will appear later this week. Good games, all! and Congratulations, Boaris!

Boaris Vs. Jutdog for the WIN – Jaybird Eliminated

In an amazing comeback combined with a bizarre final 3 seconds, Kansas surpassed Ohio State and made their way to a National Title Game against Kentucky.

With Ohio State’s loss, Jaybird’s score is frozen at 530 and a first place position, but either Jutdog (Kansas) or Boaris (Kentucky) will pass Jaybird and become the 2012 Babbleball Champion and it all comes down to the final game on Monday. The loser of that game will finish in third place, meaning Jaybird has essentially locked up second place.

Kansas
Jutdog / Longball Larry
vs.
Kentucky

Boaris / McGrumps

Meanwhile, McGrumps, who owns Kentucky, is now in position to leap past seven other Players and into the Top 10 with a Kentucky win.

And Longball Larry, who owns Kansas, is currently sitting in 9th place, but a Kansas win would shove him up 8th place ahead of Some Guy in Illinois, who owned Louisville, by the way, and is now stuck yet again behind the great Babblemur (but barely…)

Monday has the potential of an awesome game, but Kentucky will be going in as the favorite. I can’t wait! Game of Thrones Tomorrow Night!

Minnesota Win & UMASS Loss Keeps Boaris Alive

In the NIT Final Four, Stanford (Akaoni / Tabulous) took out UMASS (Jaybird / Lasers), and Minnesota (Boaris / Primeshow) needed overtime to get passed Washington (Alphadog / Brewtown Crew) – Giving the winners +9 points, and keeping Boaris alive for the National Championship.

1. Jaybird 530 – A UMASS win last night would have put Jaybird beyond reach. Now, if Ohio State can beat Kansas on Saturday, Jaybird clinches the title.

2. Jutdog 494 – needs Kansas to beat Ohio State for +19, and Kansas to win the National Championship for +22 to win it all with 535 points. A Pitt win over Wash State in the CBI is worth +3, he could do that twice, but it won’t make a difference.

3. Boaris 491 – If Kentucky beats Louisville for +19, and Kentucky wins the National Championship for +22, that will put Boaris at 532, just enough to pass Jaybird IF Ohio State loses to Kansas. Minnesota can add another +12 by winning the NIT, but that won’t matter if Ohio State wins or Kentucky loses.

I’m rooting for Boaris now. Go Boaris! Go!

Final Week – Jutdog, Boaris & Jaybird Battle for Championship

You know what is really impressive? Of the 20 players, 16 of you still have at least one team alive, somewhere, in this the final week. So I want to congratulate everyone for doing a great job this year drafting good teams, even if you are out of contention.

Last week was a serious elimination round – Babblemur, Tabulous, Primeshow, Lasers, Alphadog, Mad Mader & more saw their hopes dashed against the sweaty hardwood. Although there are 11 teams still playing in tournaments, only three players are in contention for the coveted Babblemur B-Ball Championship and spot in the Babble-ball Hall of Fame. Time for profiles:

Jaybird, who was the Communist Division Champ this year, is sitting on a +36 point lead, with first round pick Ohio State in the Final Four, and UMASS in the NIT final four. Jaybird had a powerful season thanks to the power trio of Ohio State, Marquette, and Missouri, as well as strong supporting roles from North Carolina State, who made the Sweet 16, as well a feisty Oregon, Nevada, and George Mason.

Jaybird is seeking his second Babbleball Championship, he last won in 2009, the first year of the current set of rules, when he took North Carolina to the to the National Championship game against Michigan State. That year, Babblemur, who owned Michigan State, had the lead going into the final game, and the winner would win it all. As it happened, North Carolina spanked Michigan State hard, really hard, it was over before half time, with no chance of a come back.

Jaybird’s first opponent now in the Final Four is his brother Jutdog, who rose from the cellar this year to take the Capitalist Division Crown on strong late season play by Kansas, Michigan State, and Florida State, as well as some strong point production from Oregon, Belmont, and San Diego State. Jutdog now has Kansas in the Final Four facing off against Ohio State, as well as Pittsburgh in a best of three finale in the CBI against Washington State. Jutdog needs to not only beat Ohio State on Saturday, but also win the National Championship. There is no other way.

Jutdog is also seeking his second Babbleball Championship (since the 2008 version basically doesn’t count, the rules were vastly different). Jutdog won it all in 2010, led by West Virginia, Tennessee & Kansas State, he put four teams in the Sweet 16, and by the time West Virginia made it to the Final Four, due to some upsets earlier in the tournament Jut had clinched the championship. West Virginia lost, and Michigan State (Gunz) faced Butler (Babs) in the championship game for second place.

But both Jutdog and Jaybird need to look out for the looming threat of BOARIS. Boaris, who snuck up on Knine and Lasers in the Capitalist Division with Kentucky, Cincinnati, Michigan, Wichita State, Notre Dame, New Mexico State and Minnesota. Boaris put 6 teams in the NCAA Tournament, two in the Sweet 16, and now it all rides on Kentucky, along with Minnesota in the NIT. Boaris is 48 points out, meaning he needs a perfect storm to win: Kentucky must win the National Championship, Minnesota must beat Washington in the NIT, Ohio State must lose to Kansas, UMASS must lose to Stanford, and if UMASS and Minnesota both win, the Gophers must defeat UMASS in the NIT finale. These are long odds, but Boaris can do it.

Boaris is a fierce competitor, and would be a worthy addition to the Hall of Fame.

By the way, there are some brutal battles lower down on the Leader Board as Knine, SGII, Longball Larry, Gunz and McGrumps are all still poised to score beaucoup points in the Final Four…

Sweet Sixteen – Jaybird & Lasers Teams to Beat

WOW! What a roller coaster of Basketball last week! You know about the upsets, the buzzer beaters, the injuries. Lets talk about Babbleball:

  • Alphadog was shooting up the charts, and added +46 points last week, but Florida State, Vanderbilt, and St. Louis all fell on Sunday, eliminating the rookie from the NCAA Tournament. With only Washington and Middle Tennessee left in the NIT, Alphadog has no chance of winning. An NIT Crown though would be a bittersweet victory.
  • Everybody else has at least one team in the Sweet 16 – which is amazing! Good job everyone!
  • Jaybird, Lasers, and Longball Larry each have THREE teams in the Sweet 16. This is huge point potential, especially since every game now is worth even more points, culminating in the +17 National Championship. Longball Larry may be 105 points behind Jaybird, but with the right combination off wins and losses, yes, it is possible, Larry. You could still win.
  • Seven players have 2 teams in the Sweet 16, nine players have just one to rest their hopes on.
  • The NIT is HOT.  Of the 11 teams still alive in the NIT, nine are player owned, all nine by two players.  Doing a quick point check, any one of those teams has the potential to generate a total of +28 or +29 if they run the NIT and take the crown. Jaybird has THREE teams in the NIT, by the way…
  • The CBI is in the quarterfinals – Butler, Pitt, Washington State and Wyoming are all alive. There is some point potential here, 12-14 for beating other players since the last two teams play a “best of three” series.
  • The CIT is mildly interesting and hard to predict because they don’t use a set bracket but seed teams after each round. Mercer (Brewtown Crew) and Old Dominion (Longball / Gunz) are alive here.

The NCAA Tournament games left are worth an increasing amount of points for wins. Winning the next Sweet 16 game is worth +8, plus the 5 points for beating two other players (unless you play yourself like Mad Mader).  The Elite 8 games are worth +11, the Final Four games are worth +14, and winning the national championship is +17.  I’ll save you some math and tell you now that the team that wins the next four games, assuming they always beat teams you don’t own, will net +70 for the wins and the tourney points. The runner up will net +48. The Final Four losers will be netting +32.

Players by the Numbers (points earned last week, teams left)

  • Jaybird +82 (Ohio State, Marquette, NC State; NIT: Oregon, UMASS, Nevada)
  • Lasers +74 (Wisconsin, Indiana, NC State; NIT: UMASS, Nevada)
  • Some Guy in Illinois +57 (Wisconsin, Louisville; CBI: Butler)
  • Musashisan +55 (Baylor)
  • Slake B +54 (Marquette; CBI: Washington State, Butler)
  • Longball Larry +52 (Kansas, Indiana, Ohio; CIT: Old Dominion)
  • Tabulous +51 (Syracuse, Xavier; NIT: Stanford)
  • Brewtown Crew +51 (Florida; NIT: Washington; CIT: Mercer)
  • Primeshow +49 (North Carolina; NIT: Miami vs. Minnesota)
  • Mad Mader +49 (North Carolina, Ohio; NIT: Drexel)
  • Gunz +49 (Louisville; CBI: Wyoming; CIT: Old Dominion)
  • The CEO +48 (Baylor; NIT: Miami)
  • Jutdog +47 (Kansas, Michigan State; NIT: Oregon; CBI: Pitt)
  • Alphadog +46 (NIT: Washington, Middle Tennessee)
  • Akaoni +46 (Xavier, Cincinnati; NIT: Stanford, Drexel)
  • Boaris +40 (Kentucky, Cincinnati; NIT: Minnesota)
  • Babblemur +39 (Syracuse, Michigan State)
  • Knine +30 (Ohio State; NIT: Middle Tennessee)
  • Mooseye +28 (Florida; CBI: Pitt)
  • McGrumps +21 (Kentucky)
